Memorial Day was celebrated at the Winsted Veterans Memorial for the first time in 2020 , since its construction and dedication ceremony Sept . 15 2019 .

Winsted veterans memorial
The Winsted Veterans Memorial is located in Hainlin Park in Winsted , and was designed by local resident Mitchell Littfi n .
The memorial was dedicated and hosted a large crowd of visitors Sept . 15 , 2019 , and hosted the Memorial Day celebration May 25 , 2020 . The celebration Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there was no public / hosted event for Memorial Day in Winsted .
Martin Krueger Post 407 of the American Legion members still actively recognized the day in several ways .
• Honors – rifl e salute and taps – was rendered at both the Winsted Public Cemetery ,. and the Winsted Veterans Memorial .
• The dais at the public cemetery will be decorated much as it always is . Families are encouraged to decorate the graves of their veterans .
• Residents are encouraged to lower their US fl ags to half-staff at dawn , and raise them again at noon . Those who fl y more than the US fl ag , are asked to follow protocol and ensure the US fl ag is never lower than others . ( Lower other fl ags fi rst , raise the US fl ag fi rst ).

Plaques honoring veterans
Veterans and their families are encouraged to purchase a veteran name plaque to be permanently installed at the Winsted Veterans Memorial pentagon court .
To obtain a form to order a plaque , call 612-504-6883 and leave a message .
The plaques are available to honor any veteran , living or deceased , who served honorably on active duty , in the reserves , or the National Guard , in wartime or peacetime .
The 11-inch-by-5-inch plaques are made of brushed stainless steel , etched with the veteran ’ s name , branch of service , and period of service .
The cost of each plaque is $ 150 , and the proceeds go directly toward the ongoing operations and maintenance of the memorial .
• Both Holy Trinity and St . John ’ s Lutheran churches rang their church bells at noon in honor of the nation ’ s fallen .
• The public was encouraged to visit the Winsted Veterans Memorial , and take the time to read the biographies of Winsted ’ s 13 fallen heroes installed around the fl ag poles .
