EXERCISE
1.
Compose three verses in a similar style to be inserted into the poem before its final
verse with the punch line.
Step 1
List eight or more typically Bajan things*** (behaviours, pastimes - e.g road
tennis - which the “Bajan Yankee” might also pretend to be unable to do,
appreciate or tolerate)
Step 2
For maximum impact, group related things together and sequence them so each
verse presents examples of the pretentious attitude/behaviour which are more
outrageous than the ones in the verse before it
Step 3
Compose the verses in a style similar to Angelic Forde’s:
- 4-6 lines in each verse
- a catalogue in each verse
- (mostly) eight syllables per line
- the same refrain in the first or final line of each verse
- some end rhyme [Using a rhyming dictionary will make this easier. E.G New
