The Contrast Challenge
EXERCISE
Think – Pair – Write
You’ll need a partner for this activity.
Before starting, consider that the monks who made Chartreuse had an approach to
life that was in sharp contrast to little Benjamin’s approach to life.
For ONE (1) Minute: Think in absolute silence about how you would explain this con-
trast using:
The two senses of the word “afterlife” in verse four. For example:
afterlife – as in being preoccupied with existence after death
after life – as in chasing after this life; living this life to the fullest
For TWO (2) Minutes: Discuss your explanation with your pair –partner
For FIVE (5) Minutes: Collaborate with your pair-partner to write out an explanation.
Now draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. On one side of the line at top or
the paper, write the words “Little Benjamin”. On the other side of the line at the top
of the paper write “The Monks”. Once you’ve done that, try to list all the examples of
contrast that exist between little Benjamin and the monks who made Chartreuse.
