IN MEMORIAM
STEVE KLAUKE
The Salt Lake Bees , the Larry H . Miller Company and the broader sports community are mourning the loss of Steve Klauke , who passed away at 69 . The renowned broadcaster , known as ‘ the voice of the Bees ,’ succumbed to injuries from an auto-pedestrian accident while on his evening walk on June 10 , 2024 .
Throughout his illustrious career , Klauke was an integral part of Utah ’ s sports landscape , calling over 4,181 regular season and playoff games for the Bees . His passionate playby-plays and iconic calls , including the memorable “ it ’ s up there , it ’ s out there , it ’ s gone !” for nearly 4,000 Bees home runs , captured the hearts of fans statewide and across the league . Beyond the diamond , Steve
Klauke ’ s voice resonated through the airwaves as the radio voice for Weber State University ’ s football and men ’ s basketball since 2015 , further cementing his legacy in Utah ’ s sports broadcasting history .
Klauke retired from the Salt Lake Bees last September after 29 seasons . He also lent his talents to the Utah Jazz , MLB ’ s Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays , among others . His contribution to sports broadcasting was recognized with the Utah Sportscaster of the Year Award in 1995 , 2014 and 2016 , and he was honored as the Ballpark Digest Broadcaster of the Year in 2014 .
Leaders and colleagues within the sports community expressed their grief and highlighted Klauke ’ s profound impact . “ Steve was one of the best voices in sports , and he was a dear friend ,” said Marc Amicone , former Bees president . “ I will cherish the countless hours we spent together at the ballpark where I got to watch and listen to him do what he loved so much .”
Steve Klauke ’ s journey from Chicago to becoming a beloved figure in Utah sports is a testament to his passion and talent . His departure leaves a void in the state ’ s sporting community , but Klauke ’ s voice and legacy will continue to resonate with fans , friends , and family alike . Our thoughts are with his wife , Sue , and their children , Adam and Lisa .
