Miller Family Message
Focus on the Good
This Is the Season to Serve
T
he holiday season is a great
time to reflect on what has
transpired during the year,
express gratitude for others, and
count our blessings. I want you to
know that I am grateful for each
of you, the incredible employees
who make up the Larry H.
Miller Group of Companies. I’m
also grateful for your spouse or
partner and for your families who
support you.
I’m grateful for the spirit of
our culture that encourages each
of us to be the best we can be. An
employee recently shared with me
12
that they found our culture to be
one where people don’t come to
work to merely survive, but where
they can thrive. Our company’s
mission is to enrich lives, and I
am proud that we not only do
this for our customers and our
communities, but within our very
own workforce for each other.
I, like you, am committed
to our mission, vision, values,
and guiding principles. During
our October Service Awards
presentations, we celebrated
hundreds of employees who
have shared 10 to 40 years with
us and who emulate these very
important values.
I believe acting with integrity
includes not only how we treat
our customers but also how
we treat each other as we have
personal interactions within the
company. It also includes how we
speak about each other when we
are not together. I enjoy receiving
comments on a daily basis from
various sources telling me about
great examples of respect and
kindness across the Group. I am
inspired when I hear uplifting
LHM Winning Spirit November/December 2019
comments as you speak about
each other.
As we move into the holiday
season, we can all find ways to
serve one another by stopping
negative chatter when it happens
and refusing to gossip, and work
instead to lift each other’s spirits.
Empathy is powerful, and when
we put ourselves in another’s
shoes, we are more accepting and
patient. Then we all feel better.
Have you ever noticed
that it’s easy to get carried
away in a conversation laden
with details about another’s
mistake, misfortune, or style
of interaction? Have you also
noticed the impact you can
have when you shut down that
conversation? It demonstrates
leadership, self-control, and
empathy when you redirect
negative comments and focus on
the positive.
Last month, the NBA
Commissioner announced that
Utah will host the All-Star Game
in 2023. I couldn’t be more
excited! It’s almost poetic that
30 years will have transpired
between Utah’s last All-Star Game
and the one in 2023. As I saw the
events of that day and listened to
the announcement, I was highly
pleased with our people in the
Larry H. Miller community.
Whether they were hosting the
live radio broadcast, greeting
dignitaries, or setting up chairs,
their focus was on the outcome.
Everyone jumped in to lend a
helping hand. The end goal was
a successful announcement—not
a tally of who did or didn’t do
something. It’s easy to see that we
are more productive, effective,
and engaged when we feel the
power of positivity in our actions
and in our speech.
It’s my holiday wish this year
that we will all continue to focus
on the good—in ourselves, in
others, and within our company.
Please join with me to raise the
bar, to protect our culture, and to
build a strong environment where
our employees can continue to
thrive. Happy holidays! ◆
