Bees Marketing Efforts Honored
Ballpark Digest is a major industry publication within
the baseball world, and the Salt Lake Bees are proud to
have received honorable mentions from Ballpark Digest
for some of their recent marketing efforts.
Earlier this year, the Bees, with creative materials
created and produced by Saxton Horne Communications,
launched a major campaign accompanied by two different
TV spots. The primary campaign was called “Smith’s Family
Night” and was focused on a weekly promotion that offered
four tickets and four hot dogs for $20 on Monday Nights
in an effort to get families to enjoy a summer ballgame.
Along with the discount, the full campaign also included
the popular and hilarious “Smith’s Produce Race,” wherein
people dress in vegetable costumes and attempt to run the
bases. The accompanying TV spot called “Produce Surprise”
was highlighted by the magazine.
The other TV spot, “Bumble in the ‘Burban” took a
different approach, putting beloved Bees mascot Bumble
in the spotlight, either in a family’s vehicle or having fun
at the ballpark. The combination of humor and great
footage of summer fun at a Bees game really resonated
with audiences, furthering the overall Bees message of
“It’s Better at the Ballpark.” ◆

NHL Hockey Returns to Utah with Salt Lake Shootout
After a 10-year hiatus, the National Hockey
League returned to Salt Lake City in
September as 12,367 fans witnessed the LA
Kings’ 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks in a
preseason game at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
“Salt Lake City is a wonderful area with
great hockey tradition,” said Kings president and
Hockey Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille. “This game
is special, and this series is something we are very
much looking forward to.”
The Kings featured forward Trevor Lewis—
who was born and raised in Cottonwood Heights
and was the first native Utahan to win the Stanley
Cup—and defenseman Daniel Brickley, a Salt
Lake City native who recently signed as a free
agent from Minnesota State University.
“It was pretty electric out there,” Brickley
said. “I hope we entertained the folks that came.
Everything I expected and some.”
Future Kings preseason games will be held in
2019 and 2020 in this three-year agreement. The
last NHL game in Utah had occurred on October
5, 2008, between the Kings and San Jose Sharks
in the facility known as the E Center in West
Valley City.
“Vivint Smart Home Arena is thrilled to
host NHL games and showcase the Los Angeles
Kings,” said President Jim Olson. “We have a
proud history of ice events with the Salt Lake
Golden Eagles and Winter Olympics to an
ongoing series of ice shows and special events.” ◆
