Goodbye, Jordan High
Utah, 1997
Today, most people know Jordan
Commons as the headquarters of
the LHM Group of Companies,
which includes an office tower,
restaurants, and the original Megaplex
Theatres. What they may not realize
is that just over 20 years ago, in 1997,
Jordan Commons was the site of an
unused former high school.
The old Jordan High had been
replaced by a newer facility just a
few blocks away in 1995, and the
community had not decided what to
do with the old campus when Larry
and Gail Miller bought the property.
They planned to develop the property
into what it is now, but they were very
aware of the community’s feelings
when discussing removing a place
where students had made memories
for decades.
To help them say goodbye, Larry
and Gail invited Jordan High alumni
to a special farewell party on April 19,
1997. While former students walked
through the building and listened to
music from the Jordan High jazz band,
Larry and Gail announced a special
donation to the alumni scholarship
fund.
The gesture was much appreciated,
as was the effort to preserve the facade
of the old high school, which can still
be seen today as part of the Megaplex
Theatres at Jordan Commons. ◆
