The Birth of a
Retail Superstar
Utah, 1997
March 1997 welcomed a new
division of the Larry H. Miller
Group of Companies. Since 1987,
the Utah Jazz had owned a number
of Pro Image stores, but in 1997 the
Group decided to make the stores
independent—which meant severing
ties with Pro Image. As part of the deal,
the stores were required to change
their name, which led to the creation of
Fanzz. The unique name pays homage
to the Jazz and to the Salt Lake Buzz
(later renamed the Salt Lake Bees).
Initially, the first Pro Image store
was used as an in-stadium store for
selling Jazz-themed merchandise at
Jazz games, but as more stores were
acquired, the retail company began to
sell all forms of sports apparel. Today,
30 years after the purchase of the first
three stores in Utah, there are more
than 100 stores in 22 states and Fanzz
is a major part of Miller Sports and
Entertainment. â—†
