The Jazz’s First
Retired Jersey
O
n December 14, 1985, the Utah
Jazz retired jersey number 7, which
belonged to a Jazz legend. “Pistol”
Pete Maravich was, in fact, the very
first Jazz player in history. Traded from
the Altlanta Hawks in 1974, Maravich
became part of the newly announced
New Orleans Jazz expansion team.
Pistol Pete played with the team in
New Orleans for several years, reaching
superstar status that continued when
the team moved to Utah. Although his
career with the NBA lasted only another
season, he brought with him a legacy
of success and good character that have
endured. His death in 1988 at the age
of 40 further cemented that legacy.
Today, Pete Maravich is considered
one of the 50 greatest basketball players
in history and someone Jazz fans
remember er very fondly. ◆
