UTAH 2019 Utahn of the Year Gail Miller Receives Utah’s Thanks G ail Miller can answer to many different titles—chairman of the board, advocate for the homeless, example for women in business, believer in education, owner of NBA team—and now Utahn of the Year. Joining other recipients such as Senator Orrin Hatch (2017), Elizabeth Smart (2009), and Larry himself (2008), Gail is another clear and deserving recipient of this recognition. In the decade since taking the helm at the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, she has not only grown the company, but she has helped greatly enrich the communities in Utah and everywhere the Group does business. And it’s not just her direct efforts, but it’s how she leads in a way that inspires others to join her that spreads so much good in the world. Whether it’s inspiring Jazz fans to eliminate racism, matching donations for every dollar toward homelessness, supporting youth in educational goals, or campaigning for better health, Gail is there personally making Utah and every Utahn better. ◆ UTAH Words of Wisdom Gail Miller Invited to Speak at Major Events G ail Miller is no stranger to being invited to speak at various events and in front of different groups throughout the year. Recently, Gail was invited to speak to three important groups in Utah: the Utah Bar Association, the Utah Association of CPAs, and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. The Bar Association’s annual Fall Forum included Gail as a plenary speaker, where she addressed attendees for an hour on the topic of civility and well-being. The address also tied into the themes of Gail’s book, Courage to Be You, which was published in 2018. The Utah Association of CPAs held its winter conference on December 12, where Gail was a featured speaker discussing ethics. The Salt Lake Chamber’s annual ATHENA Awards Luncheon is where local women are honored for their leadership achievements. In fact, it’s an award that Gail has won in the past. This year, Gail was a featured speaker at the luncheon, where she spoke about standing up for inclusion and diversity. These topics reflect Gail’s core values, and public speaking engagements allow her to further the LHM Group mission of enriching lives. ◆ 2 LHM Winning Spirit January/February 2020
