Wingin’ It Arlington Municipal Airport Newsletter Issue 13—August 2019 EAA Chapter 34 Aviation Youth Camp by JoAnn McCorkle, EAA EAA Chapter 34 held its first annual Aviation Camp on June 14-15, 2019 at Arlington Municipal Airport. Eight high school students participated in the camp, which was offered to the students at no charge. Each day started with check-in at 8:30 a.m., and ended about 4:00 p.m. All classes, except the actual Build class, were held in the air-conditioned office area of the Chapter’s hangar. The first day, the students attended Ground School and a class on Aviation Weather. The “Build” class in the hang- ar was next, and the most popular class among the students. The day concluded with a class on Navigation. On the second day, students were divid- ed into two groups of four each. One group toured the tower, while the other flew with their pilots (one student with one pilot). Then, the groups switched, so that all could have the thrill of the flight, and also see how the Controllers manage the air traffic. One of the pilots, Rob McLear, had two Go-Pro’s, one in his plane and one in the Tower. He edited the footage into a single video, so both the pilot and Controller can be heard. Watch the video of the Young Eagles’ Flights: Hear the camper’s first time talking on the radios, from the cockpit and Tower perspec- tives. Michael Costello, a high school member of the EAA, gave a class on Aviation History. The final session on the second day was a class on Aviation Careers, with four speakers representing different careers in the aviation industry. 5000 S.
