Arlington Municipal Airport Newsletter EAA Chapter 34 Aviation Youth Camp (cont’d from Page 1) The first Aviation Camp was a success. Each of the participants was asked to complete an exit survey, and all had enjoyed the experience. Volunteers learned what worked well, and what could be improved. EAA appreciates the efforts of all those who helped- Arlington Municipal Airport, and partners at the airport; Harrison Aviation and Van Bortel Aircraft. Thanks for all your support. Aviation Camp, Part 2 - The Riveting Workshop by Carl Orton, EAA Chapter organizers JoAnn McCorkle and Becky Costello thought a hands-on “build” activity would be inter- esting for the campers. The activity was patterned after the EAA Convention metal workshop projects - a mini-section of a wing spar. The goal was to have the campers pull some blind rivets, countersink the L-angles and dimple the flat stock, then buck some domed and flush rivets. The Chapter had not provided a metal working shop in decades, so the tools, air, and rivets had to be ac- quired. The members gathered flat stock and pur- chased some L-angle. The Committee decided that more of the prep work should be completed in ad- vance, as compared to the activity at Oshkosh, where participants do ALL work. John Allison created "kits" of all the building materials required for each "spar" section, and tested and pre- calibrated the air tools and countersinks. Angle pieces were pre-drilled, as were the "web" pieces of flat stock. This coordination saved dozens of hours, and caught a potentially embarrassing "oops". Some of the rivets were of different alloys and "smushed" too easily! The hands-on project began with a safety briefing and three metal-savvy members, John Allison, Aitor Lazo, and Carl Orton, coached the eight campers. They worked hard, and, enjoyed the chance to build something themselves. The projects sported a Chapter 34 sticker when completed.
