Standing on the grounds surrounding her home in 2002, Leslie Balfour-Lynn remarked:“ Why don’ t we plant a few vines?” The very first wine she went on to produce made waves in the wine world. Balfour Brut Rosé 2004 became the first English wine to win a gold medal and trophy at the International Wine Challenge. Last year, the winemakers produced over 800,000 bottles of England’ s finest wines. Not bad for an endeavour that began with the simple maxim:‘ If we can’ t sell it, we’ ll drink it’.
GENERATIONS OF VITICULTURE AND WINEMAKING EXPERTISE Winemaking at Balfour Winery is led by father and son team, Fergus and Owen Elias. Owen is one of the founders of English wine. Meanwhile, his son Fergus is pioneering a new generation of awardwinning English wines.
Three generations of the Turner family have cared for the vineyard and estate. Cathy, Stef and their son Billy therefore possess a remarkable understanding of the terroir alongside an unwavering commitment to sustainability. This is integral to producing Balfour’ s inimitable wines.
