Wine Tourism is Coming Home

Simon Thorpe of Wine GB shares his excitement about the rise of English vineyards .
This year of all years let ’ s toast to what makes Britain great . And with a Platinum Jubilee to celebrate , there can be no better way than with a glass of two of wine produced right here on our doorstep . Better still , you can now immerse yourself in a full wine experience by visiting a vineyard . You no longer need to head to the plains of Champagne , the Tuscan hills , or the wine route of Stellenbosch … There are some incredible wine destinations much closer to home . Just as our wines have been gaining national and international recognition , so is our wonderful vineyard hospitality and the many different experiences ripe for discovery .
Great Britain is one of the smallest wine regions in the world , and it is also one of the most dynamic , sparking interest with wine experts and enthusiasts alike . Sales of
English and Welsh wines have been increasing year on year ; they are more accessible than ever before through high street and independent retailers , restaurants , hotels and bars proudly promoting and selling them .
Of course , another great way to get to know more about wines - and buy them - is direct from the vineyards . Tourism is now an exciting and growing part of the UK wine industry and offers a huge range of experiences to delight , inform and entertain .
Over 200 vineyards across England and Wales throw open their doors to welcome visitors offering a range of experiences including tours , tastings and ‘ cellar door ’ shops . Guided tours are conducted by people who are knowledgeable and entertaining , and in some smaller vineyards you may even get to meet the owner or winemaker . Visitors will take away a great memory and new experience .
