Clare Amies, WorkSafe Chief Executive, said
the high quality of the finalists was a strong
indication that employers and workers were
making safety a priority in more Victorian
workplaces than ever before.
• 384 high efficiency 260 W Tindo
‘Karra’ photo-voltaic panels.
"Each finalist has brought a new perspective
to workplace safety by thinking 'outside the
square’," Ms Amies said.
• Produce up to 625 kWh per day.
• Offsets up to 16.5 tonnes of
greenhouse emissions per month 1 .
Compared to traditional ‘DC’ solar power
systems, the AC micro-inverters allow
each panel to produce their best yield
independent of each panel.
"To see the lengths many of the finalists
have gone to in order to address a health
and safety issue or get back to work after an
injury is simply inspiring.
• Australian made high efficiency
panels, used in Australian high
performance manufacturing.
The 384 panels and micro-inverters cover
approximately 50 per cent of the current
factory roof space and offset in excess of 50
per cent of total factory consumption. 1
Unlike residential solar power systems where
the majority of power is fed directly back
into the grid, commercial solar is utilised as it
is produced. This provides a direct offset and
a better yield. 01 The Miglas Windows manufacturing facility

Future development plans for battery
storage are underway to capture excess
production on weekends when the business
does not operate and consume the power
generated.

n late 2016, Miglas Windows commissioned
the installation of a 100 kW AC, Australian
made, photo-voltaic system. Tindo Solar,
the only Australian made system on the
market, was selected as a perfect fit.

"Every finalist can be proud of the wonderful
work they are doing to make Victorian
workplaces safer, and to help injured
workers back to safe work."
AWA member, Miglas Windows, in
collaboration with HIAB Australia, took
home the award for Best Solution to a
Manual Handling Issue.
The risks involved in shifting double glazed
windows (weighing up to 400 kg) from
factory to worksite prompted Miglas, a
small, family company that manufactures
industrial glass windows and doors, to seek
a safer system. Miglas engaged transport
engineering solution company, HIAB
Australia, to help design a unique truck and
forklift transport system. The truck has a
customised loading and load restraint system
to move glass around the factory, while
the forklift uses a special vacuum suction
attachment to unload the glass. The forklift
can also be mounted onto the truck to assist
with unloading at the worksite.
