AUTUMN has a different feel this year , postrestrictions just as the nights draw in . Dark nights see a new look and message for a well-known charity , now The Winchester Beacon , formerly Winchester Churches Nightshelter , which is launching under a new name to better reflect the life-changing support it gives to homeless people . Publisher Guy Hanson and I are delighted that so many musical and theatrical performances have resumed . Winchester Cathedral ’ s Christmas Market is back this year , truly something to look forward , along with the traditional pantomime .

Fresh from viewing Olympic and Paralympic television coverage , we cheered on teen tennis star Emma Raducanu as this issue took shape . Her huge smile , graceful demeanour and sporting prowess are going to take her even further . Meanwhile our very own Zara Rutherford , a former St Swithun ’ s pupil , has taken to the skies on a world record attempt , young athletes train with Winchester & District Athletic Club , and riders and equestrian industry students are busy at Sparsholt ’ s fabulous Equine Centre .
Winchester ’ s strong military connections were in my mind as I watched recent world events . Please take time to reflect on all who serve in our Armed Forces on Remembrance Day .
