Every season , experts from Hillier Garden Centre on Romsey Road offer workshops where you can learn how to get the most from your garden and be creative with plants and flowers . Its May hanging baskets and containers afternoon was excellent and we came away with a lovely planter , which was included in the price . Participants also get tea and cake in the coffee shop . Ask in-store for details of the next workshop .

Enjoy a walk round some of the best private gardens in and around Winchester as part of the National Open Garden Scheme , which raises money for good causes .
Summer openings include gardens of all kinds – from stately manor houses to small private gardens . Many locations also provide tea and cake .

WHERE DOES MY GARDEN WASTE GO ?
Ever wondered what happens to your green garden waste ? Everything collected from our brown bins is taken to one of two composting sites in the county : Herriard near Basingstoke and Chilbolton near Stockbridge .
It ’ s then composted for 20 weeks and turned so it breaks down evenly . The finished product is Pro-Grow , a high-quality soil conditioner that is available to buy at every recycling centre .

Winchester Horticultural Society has a lively programme of events through the year ; these include monthly talks and garden visits . Topics over the Summer include vegetable growing and ground-covering plants .

Coffee grinds are great for acid-loving plants like azaleas , hydrangeas , blueberries and lilies . Instead of throwing them down the sink , cool and scatter them in your borders or pick up a bag from Waitrose in Weeke , which has a bin outside the store filled with the day ’ s grinds for gardeners .
