City jeweller Donna Laine shares a few of her favourite things about life and work in Winchester
PEOPLE
My favourite city landmark
The cathedral . I love the fact it has stood at the heart of the city for hundreds and hundreds of years and yet still never fails to impress . I can ’ t walk past it without stopping and seeing something new .
If I ’ m treating myself it ’ s most likely to be at
The Original Flower Stall opposite Marks & Spencer , where I regularly buy white roses . I really believe in supporting other independent businesses and we ’ ve just started gifting all customers spending over £ 250 bouquets of roses from David .
For a dinner date
I ' d book The Ivy , because I always feel special there . It ’ s one of those places where you can wear your diamonds and really dress up .
My jewellery top tips
Have your jewellery professionally cleaned at least once a year to ensure it doesn ’ t lose its sparkle and checked to ensure settings are still robust . It ’ s heart-breaking to lose a precious stone and it can be expensive to replace too .
Gold has gone up in value significantly over the last decade . Making sure valuation certificates are up to date will protect you against low insurance replacement values .
I love my work because
Helping customers mark a special occasion or life event through a piece of jewellery for themselves or someone they love is a real joy . We are proud to have been a part of so many local people ’ s lives in that way .

My favourite walk
I have a Malshi puppy who is often in the shop and who has her own little fan club . Our favourite walk is along the Water Meadows , stopping for a coffee at The Handlebar Café .
Consider preloved jewellery
