from Henry VIII in 1543 was Woodmancote ( Hants ), a former property of Hyde Abbey , the ‘ New Minster ’ of Winchester originally founded by King Edward the Elder . As a result , sometime in the 1550s the College acquired a large and miscellaneous collection of deeds , leases and account rolls of Hyde Abbey , relating to estates which never were and never became College properties ; and which had by some means or other found their way to Woodmancote . They remain among the College muniments and include the oldest documents among them , four treasured Anglo-Saxon charters .
In Sheila Himsworth ’ s catalogue , as in the Muniment Rooms themselves , the estate records - title deeds , leases , surveys , court rolls and accounts - are arranged estate by estate . The full list of estates of which records are preserved among the archives ( apart from some modern acquisitions , not in the published catalogue ) is as set out below . Some are much more fully documented than others ; those for which the materials are reasonably ample are marked with an asterisk . Most represent agricultural estates , but the documents under such references as London , Winchester , Southampton , Newbury , Romsey etc relate to urban property , to tenements and messuages within these towns and cities which have at one time or another been in the College ’ s hands . The muniments that came from Hyde have a section to themselves , to distinguish them from those for the College estates proper .
