The Warden and Fellows passed over Edward Appleford , recommended by Charles II in 1661 for the post of Steward of the College estates . Next year the King wrote again ; ‘ Our will and pleasure is that the said Edward Appleford be appointed . Your ready compliance therewith we shall expect ’ ( Appleford did not get the job , notwithstanding ). A particularly poignant letter comes from Charles ’ father , Charles I ( fig . 4 ), recommending William Myles , already a Winchester scholar and one who “ hath , as we are informed , made a good progresse in his studyes ”, for nomination to the next vacancy among the fellows of New College . It is dated from “ our Court at Newport in ye Isle of Wight this 18th of November 1648 ”. Less than a fortnight later Charles was taken by force from his island refuge , and two months later he was facing his judges . pedigrees sent in by those seeking for their relatives places in College as of right under the statutes as Founder ’ s Kin ( fig . 5 ). Mostly these are of interest primarily to the genealogist , but they can be lively sometimes . A nice letter of 1828 from one Henrietta Carey to Warden Huntingford discreetly mentions that she is writing , enclosing a pedigree , on the advice of the Duchess of Buckingham . Will the pedigree be sufficient to guarantee her son ’ s election next July - provided she can secure at least four votes among the fellows ? ( She had already , she hinted , secured three , including , one supposes , that of the Warden ).

A good many others besides Kings and Queens did their best in those days to secure nominations to places and offices in the College for their children and kinsfolk and there are numerous letters from them too . Comparable in their aim but in a slightly different category are the voluminous proofs and
