II : The Stained Glass Programme of Winchester College Chapel ( 1392 – 93 )

Commission . In 1382 , William of Wykeham , Bishop of Winchester and chancellor to Edward III and Richard II , founded the college of St Mary at Winchester for the education of ‘ poor and needy ’ boys ‘ furnished with good character ’. 2 The main buildings , including the spectacular chapel at the heart of the college , were completed between 1387 and 1395 , and an elaborate glazing programme was a key feature of the original chapel design . In 1393 Wykeham ’ s household accounts record payment for two carts ‘ carrying glass for windows of my Lord ’ s College at Winchester ’. 3 This almost
certainly provides a date for the arrival of most of the stained glass for the chapel . Work on the chapel , as with the other college buildings , was led by a skilled team of professionals , represented in the east window of the chapel in captioned portraits : Thomas Glazier (‘ operator istius vitri ’ [ maker of this glass ]), the master mason , William Wynford , the carpenter ( probably Hugh Herland who designed the roof ), and the clerk of works , Simon Membury .
