III : The South Window of Thurbern ’ s

Chantry ( c . 1502 – 3 )

The Chantry of Robert Thurbern , Warden of the college ( 1413 – 50 ), was built on the south side of chapel between 1473 and 1481 . The south wall originally contained two windows . One was fitted with stained glass in the mid-1490s , which is now lost . The glass of the other was created around 1502 – 3 , and survives almost completely intact in the eastern window ( fig . 15 ).
Commission . The donors of the window are depicted along its base , kneeling in prayer . The scrolls that flow from their mouths and inscriptions below them are fragmented , though one name can be deciphered below the left panel in the inscription ‘ Orate Dogoode ’ ( fig . 16 ). This refers to John Dogoode , a Scholar of Winchester from 1458 and later a Fellow of the college
