ost of September has been more like a continuation of summer; wet, hot and humid. It seems like fall will never arrive! Fortunately, cooler weather has arrived in the latter part of the month. I am sure that many gardeners in the area are just as ready for fall as I am. I know some have already thrown in the towel; tired of battling weeds, insects, disease and the predictably unpredictable weather. Forget the garden, forget the bugs, it is time for fall festivals!
Gardening questions have tapered off a bit this month. Concerns have been variable with no single issue coming to the forefront. If I were to say that there was one single concern this month it would be giant spiders invading the home! It stands to reason; this is the time of the year when wolf spiders are typically seen indoors. These harmless spiders are simply looking for a secure place to make their egg nests.
This month Master Gardener basic training classes were due to begin; however, a low enrollment forced the cancellation of this year’s classes. Preparations for Master Gardener training takes a good part of the year. Scheduling instructors and reserving the meeting room at the Southeast Area office was began in March. After the class schedule was worked out application documents were sent to individuals indicating an interest in the training. Flyers were printed, news releases were sent to local newspapers, and it was extensively promoted on KGGF live radio shows. Unfortunately, I only received ten applications by the September 6 deadline, which did not meet the minimum required by K-State Extension Horticulture department.
The other news I have to share is that we have a new radio program that will begin airing on KKOW radio the last week of September. This is an interview recording made in studio that presents a lively, discussion-style format covering current topics and issues in agriculture and horticulture. The host is Steve Scott who handles the morning programs on KKOW 860 AM radio.
