Shaking Up Butter and Lots of Smiles

Again this fall, staff at a Neodesha elementary school requested that we be a part of their First Grade Field Trip to the Little House on the Prairie site. Apparently, our butter making classes are a popular part of the day for their students, and it is always an enjoyable time for us as well.

The weather cooperated and Heather, our Nutrition Assistant, and I were able to set up our classroom outside where we discussed important topics such as cows, milking, cream, and how butter would have been made by Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family when they lived at this site. Students got hands-on experience in shaking up a batch of butter and tasting a sample on a cracker. General consensus was…Yummy.
