t is not spring but we’ve been cleaning at the Independence office! Our newly painted purple walls give the office a great facelift. It was also the perfect time for us to rearrange the office and we are excited with the results. We encourage you to stop by and take a look for yourselves!

I have been learning new things this month as I register our national qualifying teams for their respective national contests. The teams are excited to travel and have been practicing on a regular schedule! Youth on the national teams also competed at the Kansas State Fair. Our senior horticulture team placed first and our intermediate team placed third. A photography judging team also participated at the state fair.

I traveled with agents, Will Morris and Cheri Nelson, to deliver inside exhibits to the Kansas State Fair and set up. We have great participation in the state fair so it takes us awhile to unpack the cars, carry all the exhibits inside, and set them up. I also picked up wheat variety plot materials for one of my families. They will be planting five varieties of wheat this fall to harvest next summer. They will report which variety will have the best yields, protein, planting conditions, rainfall, etc. This is a great learning experience and hands-on application for the youth!

This month I was also able to help with the Second Annual Water Festival held by the Montgomery County Water Conservation District and Montgomery County Farm Bureau. Our 4-H members brought goats, sheep, cattle, and chickens for elementary students to view. 4-H members discussed their animals with the visiting elementary youth. It was great to see 4-H youth at the event in the role of FFA officers as well. These youth were leading groups, talking about farm equipment, and talking about field crops.

I was also on Wildcat Wednesday this month! I showcased sewing and photography projects that just arrived back from the Kansas State Fair. I also worked with 4-H Council this month to go over fair changes, record books, new treasurer information, and planning duties for the awards banquet. We would love to have you join us to see all of our accomplishments on November 8, 2018 at the Coffeyville Recreation Center. You can rsvp by calling the Independence Extension office!
