Wildcat Connection March 2019 | Page 18

hile the rain and snow has been keeping our fields and pastures messy, we have been busy in Wildcat Extension. With trainings, events, programs and schools, it’s never a dull day.

On February 11, we had our 2019 Pre-Plant Corn School at the Southeast Area Research and Extension Center. We had a good showing of producers and industry representatives as we covered corn production and policy updates coming from the nation and state. The day after the corn school was a fantastic showing of people around the state for the Industrial Hemp meeting. On February 23 was Tractor Safety in Labette High School.

Next month we have even more programs and schools. On March 5, Cherokee County Extension is hosting a Land Value and Lease meeting at the Parsons Extension Center. This will very likely have a good showing of producers from around the southeast Kansas region. Join us on March 7 for Donuts and Dicamba in Independence and Parsons. The name of the event is a little campy to get people’s attention but really it’s the KDA required training for applicators to use Dicamba on soybeans.

The last agricultural program for March will be Dirt Day on the 18 in Neodesha. This program will involve seven speakers covering so many awesome soil topics like geology, conservation, nutrient control, and production. In most production meetings of this kind we just talk about crop fertility but Dirt Day will be for both crop and cattle producers and will cover many other more unique current topics.

In addition to these events there will also be Women in Ag on March 1 and 4-H Garden School from March 11 to 14, 2019. Jeri and Jacob’s report will likely cover these events better.

I sure hope you’ll join us for a program or all of them. I know that it’s about time to top dress nitrogen on fescue pastures and wheat fields but it doesn’t look like it going to dry out anytime soon, so you minus well learn some great new knowledge with Wildcat Extension.
