n true extension fashion I have had a busy month jumping from one project to the next. A first for the Wildcat District was participating in Money Smart week. We had three youth financial books on display throughout the district via Storywalk. The Storywalk boards were at three libraries for a week. Storywalk takes a book apart page by page, is laminated and then attached to corrugated boards with lawn stakes and put up around the library for families to walk and read together. It fit nicely in as an added activity for Walk Kansas as well.

FCS agents are advisors for our Family and Community Educators, FCE. These clubs have been around for many years. This year at the annual area recognition event, Labette County recognized a club and a member for extended years of service. We appreciate the help provided to our communities and “Don’t Dodge Difficulty” has been a staple in Labette County for 90 years. Doris Farran has been a part of this charge for 50 years. FCE provides education and leadership training for public policy action on family issues. The organization aims to strengthen individuals, families and communities through continuing education, developing leadership, and community action. As a grassroots volunteer organization they continue to deal with family issues before they become leading social concerns. They welcome new volunteers to their network of women and men who are taking a stand for families, determined to change their communities for the better, enriching their own lives and who are empowering others to reach for the same dreams.

I have presented for a third time as well with the Momentum program in Independence. I have the privilege of presenting “In the Real World” to each new group. Momentum partners those trying to get out of poverty with community members that are in a position to be a positive role model. “In the Real World” helps participants get a realistic view of working with a monthly budget and trying to make ends meet without overspending. The program continues to drive conversations with each class that is relevant to their success in the community.
