anuary has been a great month to expand and implement new ideas in the hopes to provide quality programming to the people in Southeast Kansas and the Wildcat Extension District.
This month, I have been organizing an industrial hemp educational meeting that will be held on February 12, 2019. Since this is a new venture for the state of Kansas, there are many questions surrounding this topic and what it will mean to Kansas agricultural producers. In February, Dana Ladner with the Kansas Department of Ag along with Jason Griffin who is the director of the John C. Pair Horticultural Center near Wichita will travel to Parsons to provide information on industrial hemp and important information potential growers should consider. This will be a great meeting to provide information and clarity to this topic.
In addition, I have also organized a series of wildlife programs for 4-H aged youth within the district. There are a variety of topics that will be address from February to late April. Some of the topics addressed by local Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism employees include: threatened and endangered species, wildlife habitat, reptiles, birds and much more. I also have Wildcat District agents Katie Townsend and Jacob Weber teaching the youth about insects and insect damage. These will be great opportunities for area youth to expand their knowledge on wildlife as well as the variety 4-H has to offer.
Along with program planning, I have been involved with focusing on increasing the health of residents in Southeast Kansas. I have been working with our family and consumer sciences agents across the district to better understand the needs of the county and help to implement lasting changes. I have been a part of the newly created Labette County health coalition, known as SHIFT Labette, as well as worked to implement a grant to increase physical activity and healthy eating choices. Being a part of these groups has really helped to increase my knowledge of the importance of working to increase the health of Southeast Kansas.
