Forage Production

had one big meeting this month on March 7 at the Fredonia Livestock Auction. At this meeting I discusses pasture management issues, specifically broomsedge bluestem, fescue endophyte and sericea lespedeza. Dr. Gregg Hanzlicek director of Production Animal Field Investigations for the K State College of Veterinary Medicine then discusses managing anaplasmosis. The K State Vet Diagnostic lab also sponsored the meal. We have over 90 producers attend the meeting with great feedback. From the meeting I have made several contacts as well as 3 farm visits.

I have also, as previously mentioned, done a lot of one on one consultations. Broomsedge bluestem, weed control, pasture rental rates and fertilizer rates were the main topics. I have also made recommendations this month on over 20 pasture and alfalfa soil samples and 6 forage samples. I have also had some in depth conversations with people out our area on Fescue foot and other fescue problems. One person was from North Carolina that did a google search for fescue foot and my news article with contact information came up.

I also presented on basic goat nutrition and pasture management on March 10 to the NE Ok and SE KS goat producers group. There were 15 people there and I spoke for over an hour with a great discussion. Many of these were added to our new goat and sheep list on constant contact.

I have also spent time on planning for upcoming meetings on April 3 in Girard and April 17 in Parsons as well as summer livestock judging camp.

We were able to record and hope to use parts of presentations later
