The number of types of loons there are in North America. There is the common loon, and easily the most recognizable loon of the species to people in northern Ontario. There is also the artic loon, the pacific loon, the red-throated loon and the yellow-billed loon.

Loons typically arrive at smaller Northern lakes in pairs when ice out happens. Loons build a nest close to water and prefer water on all sides of the nest. Eggs are laid in June and incubation of eggs usually
takes about a month. Adults provide for chicks up to eight weeks. By 11 or 12 weeks, the young loons are fishing for themselves and are flying soon after.
