More is less

Hauling in gear to any backcountry campsite can be a chore. Space is usually at a premium. Sea to Summit has the X series, which is a full range of collapsible cookware for campers looking to save space. The X Pot is one of the most popular choices as the cooking pot can be one of the biggest items to carry in a backpack. They come in three sizes – 1.4, 2.8 and 4.0-litre. The 2.8-l size retails for $80. These items feature a hard-anodized aluminum base with silicone walls with a stainless-steel ring for rigidity and a clear locking lid. There is the X-set 31 for $130 which bundles a 2.8-l pot, two 600-ml bowls and two 480-ml mugs. GSI has put forth the Glacier Stainless 1.1-litre boiler for $30. It is fire safe and holds a canister of fuel and stove. There is also the GSI Glacier Stainless Minimalist for $35. It’s a small unit geared towards those who take day trips to provide a quick drink or meal.

“These items are all about saving space,” Ramakko’s sales consultant Derek McDonald said. “It allows more versatility for trips.”

Grab the gear

BY WILD NORTHERNER STAFF

When it comes to enjoying the outdoors, there is no shortage of gear to get more out of the experience. The spring season is as good as any time to get some new gear and make the most of your next paddling trip or hike or fishing excursion. Ramakko’s Source for Adventure has all the gear for the next outdoors outing.

Denim with function

The Dish Denim line of jeans for women serves up value and long-lasting quality thanks to technical fabric blends. Dish fabrics are based on sustainable - and super soft - plant-based fibres like TENCEL and Modal. Ramakko’s has several different styles in straight leg and skinny fit with a variety of colours. They range from $114 to $120 per pair. The denim is designed to wick moisture away and stretch, making the jeans perfect for any occasion in town and outdoors.

“You can wear these jeans to the office for work and then out to the trails for a hike,” Ramakko’s clothing and footwear buyer Danielle Hrechka said. “They breath well and have great stretch to them for any activity. They are great for anyone.”

Keep the edge

The Work Sharp original power knife and tool sharpener ($115) and Guided Field Sharpener ($45) will ensure all your instruments for any outdoors activity are sharp and ready to get the job done when the time calls. The power sharpener is for use at home to get knives and tools prepared for use. It features outdoor and kitchen guides for precision sharpening of any knife or tool, even scissors. The Guided Field Sharpener features angle guides to give the user ultimate control.

“These are great sharpeners at a great price and they can handle anything you can throw at them,” Ramakko’s sales consultant Brent Xilon said. “This is the right tool to get the right job done. They work well and are well built.”
