Northern Flies

Tying Northern flies

For Wild Northerner

The popper.

As your popper “pops” its way back to the boat it sends out crazy loads of easy meal signals. Anticipation levels go through the roof! Any given second can mark the end of poppers’ travels as it disappears under an explosive largemouth take. It is this visual aspect that makes it such a fun way to fly fish. If it fished nicely on a floater and short leader, it should be retrieved in short strips making a “bloop” sound leaving a trail of circular wakes. Poppers can be tied up in a range of sizes and colours and although you can go all crazy with materials on these patterns, my preferred option is to keep them simple.
