Northern Numbers and Facts

The eastern white pine tree can grow to be taller than 40-metres. It is the provincial tree of Ontario and the tallest tree in northern Ontario. It has skinny needles six to 12-centimetres long. It’s easy to recognize the eastern white pine because its needles grow in bunches of five.

The eastern white pine cones are 8 to 20-cm long and they hang down from the branches. Good seed crops aren’t produced until trees are 20 or 30 years old, and then only every three to five years. Its bark is dark greyish brown with broad thick ridges that are two to five centimetres thick.

The Albany River flows northeast from Lake St. Joseph to James Bay, tying it with the Severn River for the longest in northern Ontario. The Albany river has a much greater watershed area, draining 135,200-square kilometres. Major tributaries include the Kenogami River and the Ogoki River. The Albany River has an extensive history of trading along its route.
