Currie opened Flymart.ca in 2010. Back home in Scotland, fly fishing is second nature to almost every angler. It is common. When Currie first arrived in northern Ontario, he noticed right away there were not as many people fly fishing as compared to other places he had lived and been to. Currie started when he was 14 when his older brother went and purchased a fly rod at a shop. Currie bought one, too. Currie found there were plenty of anglers fly fishing in Canada and northern Ontario, just that they were more spread out. He saw a chance to mix his love of fly fishing with business potential and opened up

his shop. Currie brought in quality gear, equipment and everything else needed for the sport from around the world such as Italy and Denmark. Flymart.ca has slowly but surely continued to gain traction as Currie sells from his shop in Massey, but also extensively on-line.

“When I started, I found there wasn’t a lot of fly gear in Canada like the kind of stuff we have in Europe,” he said. “I saw an opportunity, if you can call it that, and opened up my shop. I have a comprehensive range of fly gear and stuff. It is also tailored to the northern Ontario area. Local knowledge is the key. Flymart.ca has the right flies, rods and reels for this area. I’ve built up a good customer base in Canada and internationally. It has grown every year. I’ve noticed the gap has closed now and

other places offer more fly fishing stuff

now as well. I think I might have had something to do with that (laughs).)”

Anglers who fly fish in the region appreciate the fact that Currie opened up a shop and brought in quality and quantity. Lee Haslam has been fly fishing for 20 years and makes his home in Greater Sudbury. He has known Currie for five years and looks forward to his trips to the Massey fly shop. Haslam enjoys the time spent with Currie not only for his expertise, but also for good laughs.

“Scott has the most complete shop,” Haslam said. “He has in-depth

"He is also so personable. If you’re not sharing a story with him, you’re probably sharing a beer with him.”
