wild guide: waterhen waterfowl
Now, every hunter knows that every hunt
can’t always be perfect, and today was no
exception to that rule. While there were birds-
a-plenty flying over in droves, we struggled all
day to finish them thanks to the competing
flock of thousands of birds about a half mile
down field. That being said, we were fortunate
enough to shoot several blue snow geese
along with lesser and greater Canadas, and
some mallards.
Despite not being able to finish any large
flocks and fill a limit, we still managed a
formidable bag, had a load of fun and left the
field grinning ear to ear.
The next morning, we filled our Yeti 65 to
the brim with ducks and geese and started the
drive home. As we drove we discussed how
amazing it was to be able to drive to a lodge
and find a hunt of that quality without having
the extra expense of flights and heartache of
paring down gear to meet weight restrictions.
Not to mention, with it’s private cabins and
easy driving proximity to Winnipeg, it makes it
an ideal location for a family getaway.
Generally, when we think of getting away on
a world class hunting trip, we think of remote
locations, float planes and, ultimately, dollar
signs. But there are locations, like Harvest
Lodge, all across Canada that offer more
accessible hunts to everyone. So the next
time you are thinking “hunting trip or family
vacation?” perhaps you can have both!
