wild guide: fill the void TEXAS Texas is a hunter’s paradise with an abundance of hunting to take advantage of. There are plenty of winter hunts to capitalize on in Texas, and I did just that on my last trip there. The weather is great with incredible free-range hunting opportunities. My hunt was a last minute trip, so I wasn’t able to get a permit to take my rifle, but the outfitter had one dialed in and ready to go, so that was no problem. There are as many opportunities as you could imagine. You can hunt big game all day and call predators at night – something I had never done before that trip. It was a complete blast calling in grey fox left, right and center! There are bobcats and cougar lurking this West Texas countryside as well. We saw one bobcat, but it unfortunately never presented a shot opportunity. My main focus was the mighty Aoudad Ram, although Mouflon Rams and Goats lurked in the same territory, so I made sure I could hunt them as well. We saw tons of sheep, both Aoudads and Mouflons, as well as a handful of great Spanish Goats on the 4 day adventure deep in the West Texas hills. These hunts are tough with lots of hiking and glassing. This is a true sheep hunt for a bargain price compared to the rest. I took my girlfriend Amber with me, as she likes to hunt too and what a fantastic hunt we had. By the time my four days were up, I had taken a tremendous Aoudad, a GIANT Mouflon and both Amber and I had taken terrific Spanish Goats, not to mention a number of Grey Fox. It truly was an incredible experience and I can hardly wait to get back there to do it again. The people are amazing, the countryside rugged and the hunting incredible.
