Now we can't really do anything when organizations like Target or Bank of America get attacked. We can only hope that the organizations take the proper steps to keep our information safe. Researchers all across the globe spend day and night to find better means to protect our information. From the complex universe of quantum physics to faster trace back methods, these scientists hope to one day completely remove this online threat.
In the University of Science and Technology of China Hefei, quantum key distribution (QKD) is being developed to securely pass information between two individuals. This method relays on the basis of quantum physics. In an ideal situation the laws of quantum physics would make it impossible for any third party to gain access to the information being transferred. In reality we do not live in an ideal world and even QKD can be broken. In fact the very people that designed this method also broke it. The method behind breaking the QKD is similar to when a fingerprint is stolen, in movies, to gain access to some room but in this case instead of using a fake finger print the infiltrator uses waves. Currently there are methods to properly monitor when a breach in the system occurs. You may wonder why its important to continue focusing on QKD despite there being such an obvious issue. The reason behind it is that we are reaching the limits on classical physics and can only get so far with our current methods. Quantum physics on the other hand opens up a brand new area of security.
Now I'm not telling you runaway from the world and hide in cave. Instead what I'm saying is be careful with what information you put on the net. Despite the new technologies we are developing and no matter how secure these sites seem, every single one has a some small hole and there is always someone waiting to abuse it. Every day cyber attacks are occurring without people even realizing it. It is estimated that there are 30 000 websites hacekd a day. As time goes we will develop better trace algorithms but till then we as individuals should work to not give away information so easily. By taking small steps we can protect ourselves. Making sure we don't download anything suspicious, just because it says free doesn't mean its safe, and be wary of sites that ask for too much. Just be careful with how you treat your information online because you never know who might actually be watching
