Limestone and Travertines are softer, more porous rocks
used for centuries for building materials, flooring and
monuments. Under millions of years of heat and pressure
they turn into Marble which is much harder and less porous.
All these rocks have high concentrations of Calcium which
makes them more susceptible to attack by acids. These are
rarely used for countertops but commonly used for floors
and backsplashes.
Sandstone is simply sand, which under heat and pressure,
bonds togther into a rock. It is very porous.
It can be hard or very soft, reisits acid attack and is
sometimes used as a building material. This is very rarely
used for countertops.
Slate is similar to sandstone but the particles that make up
the rock are considerably smaller. It can be very dense and
less porous and ranges from soft to hard.
Slate if often used for floors and backsplashes . Soapstone is
primarily made of the same mineral as “talc”.
