It has been a very productive year so far at Atlanta National and I want to update everyone on what has been done and what other exciting things you can look forward to. Scott Slemp and his staff have had a great spring despite all of the cool wet weather challenges and the course is rounding into form. We have a few weak turf areas that we will continue to push but you have probably noticed some of the newly sodded areas that we just could not wait for any longer. The cold winter, shade and poor drainage have had a significant impact on turf quality in these areas but, we are working through this issue. Our Zoysia turf actually had held up better than some of our other courses so we do consider ourselves somewhat fortunate that the damage is limited to the areas that we have. The brush clearing work will help with this going forward and has also greatly improved the views through the course. Additional fertilizer applications have been done and the rough has been treated for the first time in a few years. There have been some beneficial irrigation system repairs and improvements made as well. The railroad tie replacement project on #14 looks great and we will continue to renovate steps on the course throughout the summer. Minor bunker work is being done in house by adding sand to those in need to try and improve the consistency. We have a plan to greatly improve the waste area on #9 for this fall when grass growing slows down. This will be a fairly large drainage and sand replacement program that will assist maintenance of the area and improve the playability from inside there. Yamaha and the Georgia PGA are very happy with the work that has been done and have asked us to host the Atlanta Open this summer. While we originally wanted to wait one year to do this we decided to go ahead and do so to showcase the golf course. We have a few members and golf staff members that will be competing so please come out and show your support on June 9-10. Thank you for your support and participation in the golf events. We had a great Member-Member in April. Congratulations to Randy Hines and Carmen Porreca on their victory as well as the other flight winners. Dean, Nelson and Tom have had a lot of fun with the Thursday Night “Batting Practice”. The Rotary Golf Theme has really helped a lot of our members with their golf swings. Come out and see how they can help you! We truly enjoyed hosting the Ladies Invitational in April. The weather was absolutely perfect for the event and everyone had a great time. Thanks to the committee for their hard work on that affair. Charlie Moller Atlanta National Golf Club • [email protected]
