Unfortunately, pollen creates some issues but it’s a part of getting to summer. The winter was too cold and too long for sure! It’s great to have winter in the rearview mirror. Bring on the short sleeves! Just reflecting for a minute, the month of February was miserable just like last year. Cold one minute, snow and ice here the next. March has started out cloudy and wet but hope is on the horizon. We are counting on a “normal” (if there is such a thing) spring. Some things we learned this winter were that the new bunker sand freezes solid. This presented sand grooming issues on frozen mornings in that it couldn’t be groomed during the extended cold spells. On shotgun start days, usually weekend days, the sand was still frozen at the time of the shotgun start, resulting in a less than desirable presentation. We continue to build our knowledge on how to groom this new sand for best playability. Speaking of bunkers, we hope you have noticed the new bunker rakes that are now on the entire course. The new “gator grip” handles are not supposed to splinter once they have weathered. The tour smooth head on these rakes proved to perform the best with this new sand. They should last a long time. In an effort to reduce the amount of down time from a greens aerification, we have implemented an aggressive fertility package. The greens may be a little slower early on this month but it will allow us to get to a healthier place quicker to be able to add the speed back faster. We hope to be back to a great playing surface in three weeks with a little help from Mother Nature.  We are anxiously waiting to get into the golf season with green grass and golfers abound and no frost delays! The agronomic program is strong and we believe with a little luck from Mother Nature, we are in store for an awesome year. See you on the course! Scott Slemp, Golf Course Superintendent Atlanta National Golf Club A new pine tree was installed on #9 during the month of March at Atlanta National. The new tree replaces a beloved tree that was struck by lightening earlier.
