Must-Read: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
By Rachel Brumenschenkel
"'If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the
bay,' said Gatsby. 'You always have a green light that burns all
night at the end of your dock.' Daisy put her arm through his
abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said.
Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of
that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great
distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very
near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a
star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His
count of enchanted objects had diminished by one."
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a timeless classic which shows love, mystery, and the
"American Dream." Set in the 1920s, Fitzgerald shows Nick Carraway's point of view on the
relationships and mysteries of the rich Jay Gatsby, Nick's neighbor. Gatsby has a huge mansion in
New York at which he throws many extravagant parties. After Nick befriends Gatsby, he sees the plot
unfold when Gatsby has a rendezvous with Daisy, Nick's cousin. Daisy is married to Tom, but she and
Gatsby had been in love in the past. The love triangle, mysteries of Gatsby's past, and the struggle to
be prosperous and wealthy in the 1920s all make the climax of the novel shocking and tragic.
On May 10, a new movie version of The Great Gatsby will be released in theatres. It stars
Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy
Buchanan. Baz Luhrmann is the director.
The Great Gatsby is rated five out of five paw prints and is recommended for those who are
interested in mystery, romance, action, and classic novels.
