“Don't worry about me. Just tell me what I can do for you.”
“Live.”
“Live? What do you mean?”
“You have so much life ahead of you. I hope my liver is enough to help you through. As
soon as I heard you needed help and I was a match, I told the doctors that I wanted to be your
donor. You should have seen their faces,” he said with a mischievous smile on his face. “They
were sure I would die after a little operation like that but I told them I'd be fine. I hate to admit
it but when they refused, I may or may not have told them that I would stop all of my funding
for that hospital if they didn't let me have that operation. You should have seen their faces.”
Lila shook her head sadly. “You shouldn't have done it. Not after...after what I did. I
deserved to die.”
“Don't say that! It was an accident. Everyone makes mistakes.”
She looked at the ground, too disgraced to look him in the eye. “My mistake is killing
you.”
He squeezed her hand and said quietly, “It's not your fault”
Lila couldn't fight the tears that came to her eyes. “I'm so sorry. You have no idea how
horrible I feel. I'm so scared you're going to die because of me.”
“Don't be like that. If anything you helped me.”
“Are you crazy?”
“I could throw in a cheesy line here but I will refrain from doing so.”
“Now isn't the time to joke.”
“Why not? You have to find time to be happy before the sadness takes over. You have to
understand that you only have one life to live and there will be times when you can't smile
because your pain cuts so deep – in your heart. So you can't afford to waste one moment when
you can be happy to force sorrow into your heart. Do you understand?”
“I think so, but according to what you said, I have the right to be sad now because the
pain is cutting straight to my heart. To know it's my fault that you're like this –”
“Listen to me. It's not your fault. I was dying before I got in that car accident and now
that I have these injuries it just takes away my previous worries.”
“What...what do you mean?”
“I am suffering from heart failure.”
“Heart failure?”
“My heart isn't going to be functioning for much longer.”
“Can't the doctors help you,” she asked in tears.
“They say there's nothing they can do. I went too long without getting it treated.”
“You saved my life. There's got to be something I can do for you.”
