“Were you in some sort of accident?” Lila asked as the anesthesiologist got their masks
ready. By the time she had asked her question, her mask was over her mouth.
“Yeah. I was in a car accident,” he said as his mask was placed over his mouth. Lila felt
her heart beat at an irregular pace and got a really bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. “On
Route 66.”
Lila's horrified eyes met the eyes of the man she had thought she had killed who was
now trying to save her life. She tried to tear the mask off but the man grabbed both of her
wrists and shook his head as he looked her in the eye. She was sure her eyes asked why and his
eyes offered no response but a hidden desire. He wanted to help her. But why? As the

Not only was Joel Ashton's father a billionaire but Joel was a professional football player.
It suddenly hit Lila that she had a part of Joel Ashton's liver. What was she worth? $50,000?
$100,000?
“This can't be happening,” Lila said, shaking her head in disbelief.
“What? What's wrong?”
“I almost killed Joel Ashton. Wait. Is he still alive?”
Her mother gave her a horrified look. “What do you mean? All I was told was that a
young man named Joel Ashton was a match and was willing to give you part of his liver. What do
you mean you almost killed him?”
“He was the man in the other car, Mom. That car I ran into.”
“You mean you don't know Joel? His mother assured me you two were friends and he
wanted to help you.”
Lila felt a confusion she didn't quite understand. Maybe she was dreaming. There was no
other way that Joel would claim her as a friend and donate an organ – especially not for her,
