“Missing You” By Steve Perry
Music Review by Zak Krausman.
You all know Steve Perry, lead vocalist of Journey right? I am sure you all do. But I think you may not be aware of his solo performances. So, today we are looking at the song “Missing You” from Steve Perry’s 1994 album “For The Love Of Strange Medicine." Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
What is there to say about the melody? It is beautiful. The way the melody is heavily based on the sound of the piano and violins. It is slow and has a certain feeling of sadness to it. To be completely honest, it brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it. The melody of the piece is hauntingly beautiful in this aspect.
Now to go over the voice. Steve Perry is often called “rock’s greatest voice” and for good reason. His voice is haunting, loud, and has a lot of passion put behind it, a dying quality in todays music. Just how passionate Steve is about music truly shows in this song. His voice stays with you even after the song is over.
Now the lyrics. This is a “lost love” song, so expect some strong and powerful lyrics to pull on your heart. The song begins with these words.
The hurt on your heart,
Through your eyes it shows,
The past can’t relive,
What we both know.
It is with this beginning that the tone of the song is set. What tone? It may vary from person to person. Personally, I experienced sadness and very slight depression. It is good when a song can reach me as deep as this one did. It is rare for me, but it happens when I listen to this song.
On to the chorus. In my opinion, the chorus is the strongest part of the song. It is where I really felt the passion and care that was put into this piece.
I was so wrong,
The secret's not worth keeping,
I had no faith that you would still believe,
No, now,
My heart's in your keeping,
And here I am,
Missing you.
Here is where the song touches my heart. The melody increases the tempo and volume, making the already beautiful song all the more amazing. Steve Perry’s passionate singing voice is even more haunting here with the combined strength of the beautiful melody.
I will go to my personal favorite part of the song, the third verse. The lyrics are really strong in making you feel that feeling of sadness that the song is trying its best to convey.
You were there,
Now I’m here,
You gave much more than I did,
I gave what I had to give,
If I could you know I would,
I’d make it up to you instead I’m,
(Missing you)
In the place you use to be,
You were lying next to me,
Oh I’m,
Missing you.
It is here that I realized just how much pain I was in when all my relationships were broken by the one I loved. Just how much it hurts to know that you will never have that chance to make her feel special, all just because she was not as loyal to you as you were to her.
This was a song with so much passion put behind it. I feel that music like this is fading from society today. It is a shame; it truly is. When you look at music in the 70’s and 80’s, you can see the real amount of effort that was put into the song. Each note, each beat, each sound was brought out of passion from the singer and writer.
I believe this is one of the best songs I have ever heard. It has an amazing sound and tune. Even though the song was written in the 90’s, it still has that 80’s feel to it. If you thought Steve Perry was a great singer, then check this song out. You will love it.
