ST. BONIFACE MUSEUM The oldest building in Winnipeg, and the largest oak log structure in all of North America. WINNIPEG POLICE MUSEUM See artifacts showing the history of the Winnipeg police force. ROYAL AVIATION MUSEUM OF WESTERN CANADA Learn the history of aviation in Canada with displays of vintage aircraft and artifacts, including a replica of the Cold War era Avrocar flying saucer, commissioned by the US government and built by Avro Canada in 1959. WINNIPEG RAILWAY MUSEUM The railway played a major role in the development of this city and the museum’ s goal is to preserve that heritage. ASSINIBOINE PARK ZOO Prim peacocks, monkeys, prairie dogs, camels and tigers call the zoo home. Also a variety of exotic animals like the red panda, amur tiger and several kinds of monkeys. Don’ t miss the Journey to Churchill exhibit, which features polar bears and other arctic species, and teaches about biodiversity and conservation. Daily 9 am-4 pm. FORTWHYTE ALIVE A rural oasis inside the city, FortWhyte offers more than 600 acres of aspen forest, tall grass prairie, lakes, trails and floating marsh boardwalks. Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and Nordic walking. Weekend activities include varied workshops for all ages on topics like winter survival, yoga, ice fishing and crafts. OAK HAMMOCK MARSH This thriving wetland is home to nearly 300 species of birds and wildlife. Friendly interpreters can assist you in exploring marsh, meadow, tall grass prairie, lure crops, willow shrub and aspenoak bluffs either by foot along nature trails or by canoe through the marsh. Winter activities include snowshoeing and animal tracking( weather dependant). Gift shop and interpretive centre on‐site. Programming includes decoy carving, children’ s craft workshops, astronomy evenings and trivia nights. Daily 10 am-4:30 pm. ASSINIBOINE PARK Enjoy a walk in the crisp winter air through this park’ s many trails. Winter activities at the park include a toboggan slide, ice skating on the beautiful central pond and cross-country skiing trails( weather dependant.) Covering 153 hectares along the Assiniboine River the park is also home to the Conservatory, Zoo, English Gardens, Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, Lyric Theatre, Tudor-Style Pavilion, Pavilion Gallery at WAG @ The Park, Pavilion Event Centre, Qualico Family Centre and Park Café. Park is open 24 hours daily. Main entrance is at 2355 Corydon Ave. The park is also accessible from Portage Ave, via the footbridge across the Assiniboine River, 204‐927‐6000, Map 2: D-3
ASSINIBOINE FOREST Walk through the 3 km of nature trails at Canada’ s largest urban park. This 700-acre forest is also home to 39 species of mammals, including deer, fox and 80 species of birds. BIRDS HILL PARK RANCH Offers year-round trail riding, and sleigh rides for all ages. Weather dependant. Restaurant and petting zoo on-site. Call ahead to reserve and for hours. HARBOUR VIEW RECREATION COMPLEX Located in the north end of the city, this large outdoor recreational complex offers outdoor activities for all seasons. In winter there are groomed cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs, a manicured skating rink, skate rentals and snowshoeing as well as a warm place to lounge afterwards( weather dependant).
