The Man
About Town
BY SHERI RADFORD
“I still don’t know what I
want to do when I grow up,”
Fred Lee says with a laugh.
By day, Lee works as the
Director of Alumni Engage-
ment for the University of
British Columbia. By night,
he’s a professional social
butterfly, writing for various
publications, talking on the
radio and hosting red-carpet
galas and fundraisers. He
and his husband, Joshua
McVeity, live right down-
town, “stumbling distance
from every hotel ballroom.”
Their kitchen is occasionally
used for mixing drinks but
never for cooking, which
means they eat out a lot.
With gusto, Lee rattles off a
list of favourite restaurants:
Hawksworth, Nightingale,
Bacchus, Tableau, Homer
St. Cafe, Bao Bei, Miku,
Maenam, Vij’s, Torafuku, Joe
Fortes, Cactus Club. “We
have such an amazing culi-
nary scene. It’s world-class.”
He feels fortunate that his
work in media keeps his
finger on the pulse of what’s
happening in Vancouver.
“I’m telling the stories of
amazing people doing amaz-
ing things,” he says. “I’m
forever learning.”
