Enchanted Evening
Shoreside Shakespeare
TO SEP 22 If the last time you experienced
Shakespeare was while dozing through a
high school English class, then it’s time to
give his plays another try. Bard on the Beach
(page 79) breathes new life into classics
such as Macbeth (pictured) and As You Like It,
this year’s two mainstage productions, by
incorporating music and costumes from dif-
ferent eras. And everything is staged in tents
in Vanier Park, with a backdrop of ocean and
mountains, guaranteeing a livelier experience
than any stuffy English class.—Sheri Radford

JUL 4-AUG 18 Open-air theatre hosted in Stanley Park’s beautiful Malkin
Bowl is no fairy tale—but it’s still a dream come true. This year, Theatre Under
the Stars (page 79) brings a classic rags-to-riches musical to the stage in
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which alternates nights with 42nd Street,
the story of a chorus girl's shot at stardom. So bring a cozy blanket, grab
some popcorn and get ready to make magical memories. The best part?
No fairy godmother required.—Jill Von Sprecken
