A RIVER RUN
The Red and Assiniboine rivers have played a vital role in this
area for over 6,000 years. To get a glimpse of Winnipeg from
water level, hop aboard a Splash Dash guided river tour boat as
it meanders the waterway. In just 30 minutes, passengers get to
see the gorgeous gardens of the Manitoba Legislative Buildings,
the majestic Canadian Museum for Human Rights and posh
homes along the Assiniboine River. The River Spirit Water Bus
Service, operated by the same company, is also a fun way to get
around the city via the river.
SILVER AND GOLD
Making money takes on a whole new meaning at the
Royal Canadian Mint. Visitors are wowed by the soaring
architecture of the currency factory, fl anked by fl ags from the
nations that the Mint counts as customers. Inside, listen to the
hum of giant presses that have produced a whopping 55 billion
coins for more than 75 countries. Coin collectors will have a
hard time making a decision at the well-stocked gift shop while
the young-at-heart attempt to lift a 12-kilo gold brick that,
depending on markets, can be worth close to $1,000,000.
PAINTINGS WITH PURPOSE
The story of Winnipeg’s West End unfolds on more than
70 murals that dot the neighbourhood. On the West End
Mural Tour, see art that showcases former Jet Bobby Hull and
Winnipeg’s own Jonathan Toews with a moment near and dear
to every hockey player: scoring that fi rst goal. There’s also a
whimsical glimpse into Duncan’s Millinery and the Dallian
Hat Shop that depicts chapeaux spanning two centuries. A
moving tribute to three soldiers who won the Victoria Cross
and lived on the same street reveals how Valour Road got its
name.
CAT FISHING
Todd Longley of City Cats awaits arrivals at the
Selkirk docks, just 20 minutes north of Winnipeg.
Look for the gentleman with the rock and roll hair
and catfi sh tattoos—you can’t miss him. Once
aboard, he’ll navigate to the fi rst spot of the day
and offer instruction on how to land the big fi sh.
Be prepared for an upper body workout when
the rod starts rocking; channel catfi sh of the Red
River are typically over 80 cm long. It’s strictly
catch-and-release on Longley’s boat, so the big ones
can live to fi ght another day.
