EDITOR'S NOTE
MORE THAN 150
To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation, we’ve
rounded up 150 reasons to love Edmonton (pg 16). This extensive
checklist for the summer months features tasty local eats, cultural
attractions, beloved festivals, breath-taking art, and so much more!
A list of 150 things cannot entirely capture all the wonderful
things in our city, just as 150 years does not fully cover the history
of Edmonton and the area it exists on. Though the first European
settlement was established at Fort Edmonton over 200 years ago,
Canada’s Indigenous peoples have lived on and called this land
Amiskwacîwâskahikan (or Beaver Hills House) since 3000 BC, or as
early as 10000 BC. We’ve attempted to highlight the significance of
all these cultures and their histories as we celebrate Festival City on
Treaty 6 territory.
Also in this issue, we’ve honoured the incredible impact the new
Rogers Place arena has had on the capital by awarding it our 2017
Best New Attraction (pg 14)! With top musicians from around the
world performing at this state-of-the-art attraction, you’ll have
plenty of reasons to visit it this summer and view the stunning
mosaic by Alex Janvier inside (pg 74).
Discover where to witness some incredible Indigenous athletes
compete (pg 9), visit a hub of French culture (pg 12), watch a
blockbuster film in the great outdoors (pg 66), and more within
these pages!
Welcome to Edmonton!
