Art + Antiques BY M AT T HEW ST E PANI C BETWEEN TIME & SPACE THROUGH SEPTEMBER 10  What does it mean to be in between spaces? For the 10th Alberta Biennial—titled for the time being—the Art Gallery of Alberta presents new works from 24 Alberta artists who attempt to answer this question. In Marigold Santos’ “SUBLIMATION / CONSTELLALCHEMY” (pictured), she combines Filipino folklore and her mixed-media work to explore immigration, the female body, and fragmented identity. Viewing these works will help you start your own conversations about the social and political issues affecting our province. Born in Edmonton in 1952, his work was influenced by his parents, who were heavily involved in the formation of the NDP and the advancement of women’s rights. His figurative paintings of women—which employ various bold colours and postures— raise questions of the political and sexual aspects of a male artist painting women. Curated by Chinook Guild of Fibre Arts and featuring various fine crafts— including rug hooking, quilting, needlework, and other fibre work—this historical exhibition explores how women stitched together the fabric of Canada. With wit, compassion, and insight, the guild’s chosen pieces tell the story of the women who fought for the right to vote, lived in sod houses, established the YWCA, and persevered in the face of other great obstacles.
